History

The establishment of Brookside Country Club came about as the result of two Pottstown groups drawn together by their mutual love of the game of golf: the organizers of the club and the Hill School.

The earliest history of Brookside golf is linked to the keen interest in the game that was already flourishing at the prestigious boys’ boarding school lying directly south of the present location of the course.

Soon after the school’s second attempt to build a course began, local residents organized the Brookside Country Club of Pottstown, Pennsylvania, enabling the improvements which, over the years, have made it a first-class private club.

Construction of the original 9-hole course began in 1916 and the course opened for play in the fall of 1917. Further development was put on hold by both organizations until the end of the war in 1918.

Development picked up quickly after that with Brookside approaching the 1920’s with a 9-hole course, a clubhouse, a pool, tennis courts and 153 members.

In 1920, Brookside was granted membership in the Philadelphia Golf Association and in the fall of that year was already in such good condition that it hosted an exhibition match in which British professionals Harry Vardon and Ted Ray took on reigning PGA champion Walter Hagen with his partner “Sunny Jim” Frazier. To attest to the stature of this event, these professionals had a combined 17 major golf titles in their careers.

In just several short years, Brookside Country Club had gone from concept to reality through the cooperation of two organizations motivated by the love of the sport of golf. The groundwork had been firmly established for a long and fruitful future.

The course was expanded to 18 holes 36 years later. The course design is credited to famed architect, William Gordon, who has built many well-known courses including Hawk Valley, Ocean City Golf Club, Williamsburg Country Club and the Weyhill Course at Saucon Valley, to name a few.

Gordon also worked on many redesign projects; among them is the DuPont Country Club, former home of the McDonald's LPGA Tour Championship.

Brookside Country Club is open every day in season, and because of the limited number of members, there is rarely a wait to get on the course. Brookside has one of the most reasonably priced memberships in the area.
